The 2012 Tri-City Water Follies is in the books and Jimmy Shane took home the Lamb Weston Columbia Cup in a thrilling final heat duel with J. Michael Kelly’s U-37 Miss Beacon Plumbing. Shane’s first victory on the Columbia in the U-5 Graham Trucking was also the rookie’s first as a H1 Unlimited driver. Dave Villwock’s superb start to the 2012 season hit rough waters at the first stop on the West Coast swing of the H1 Unlimited tour. A gearbox problem resulted in a rare DNF for the U-1 Spirit of Qatar 96 in the second heat and caused additional mechanical and cosmetic problems for the hull. With third place finishes in 3B and the final, Super Dave appeared mortal and Shane capitalized on every opportunity, finishing ahead of the U-1 in each of the three heats where they met. The H1 fleet now heads west to Seattle where they will compete in the Albert Lee Cup at Seafair next weekend. With most of the teams’ shops located in the Seattle area, expect any damages suffered at the Columbia Cup to be repaired by Friday and all boats ready to race.
