Deck2Deck with Steve David

Deck2Deck Staff

Just like the race teams, Deck2Deck has been preparing for the 2011 H1
Unlimited series opener in Madison, IN on Independence Day weekend. We’ve
been wondering how rules changes and hull updates will change the
complexion of the season. So, HydroDan contacted several H1 drivers to find
out!

Today, Deck2Deck launches a series of interviews with current H1 drivers.
Every few days leading up to Madison, we’ll be posting a new interview
that will give you insight as you finalize your first fantasy pick. Keep
coming back to www.Deck2Deck.us and follow @d2dhydros on Twitter to catch
the latest interview.

We lead things off with Steve David, driver of the U-1 Miss Madison / Oh
Boy! Oberto
. The defending National High Points and National Driver Points
champion took a moment to share his thoughts with Deck2Deck on the season ahead.

Tell us about any off-season upgrades or maintenance that will improve the performance of the 1.

Don’t know, they don’t always tell me. They believe it’s better that I just race as hard as I can and leave them to do what they do best. Thus far, that plan has worked well.

What race course do you think is best suited to your driving abilities?

So far it seems all of them except that dang Detroit.

What course to your knowledge is best suited for your hull and equipment?

We’re blessed with a terrific boat and crew that adapt the equipment to wherever we race.

What race is most significant for you to win, and why?

The Gold Cup, it’s a career fulfillment. Akin to the Daytona 500 or Indy 500 for their respective series.

Who do you think benefits the most from the race for lanes and the new
starting procedures?

Anyone really. I’ve been racing boats since the 1960’s and have had everything from flag starts, pace boat, Le Mans, clock, assigned, etc. Anyone quick with their mind, ready for spontaneous alternatives, multiple strategies and a great setup will benefit from a clock start.

As a follow up, who stands out in your mind as a great dicer for lanes
other than yourself?

All of them. I don’t think some of them have shown it only because they lacked the equipment. Mike Webster or Brian Perkins, for example.

Thanks Steve! Go get ’em!

Thanks and you’re welcome.
