Madison Regatta Preview

The Indiana Governor’s Cup is the first race of a potential seven race season, with the Texas site still tentative on the H1 schedule. As always, the opener at the Madison Regatta is important for several reasons.

Madison’s tight Bill Cantrell Race Course offers only four raceable lanes. This translates into a format divided into three sections per heat, with four boats per heat section. More heat sections with fewer boats per heat will amount to higher point totals per boat than usual. However, a spot on the front line of the final will be harder to come by. Another factor will be race course modifications. The historic 2.5 mile course has been shortened to 1 2/3 miles due to bridge construction. Additionally, extra laps have been added to account for the shorter race course (5 lap prelims and a 7 lap final).

The new and unique format will be unveiled in conjunction with new starting procedures in which drivers will again engage in pre-race jockeying and dicing for racing lanes. It should be wild and wooly in Madison, Indiana this 4th of July weekend!

HydroDan’s Three To Think About

Best Bet:

It’s hard to choose against the hometown boat, U-1 Miss Madison / Oh Boy! Oberto, on her home waters defending her three prior National Titles and her 2010 Regatta win.

Bounce Back:

After a somewhat difficult 2010 campaign, look for the U-5 Graham Trucking to regain form as the first string PPE entry following the departure of teammate J. Michael Kelly. Jeff Bernard should also benefit from the fight for lanes as he is a tried-and-true 5-liter starter and is proficient at securing inside lanes.

May Surprise:

Look for either the U-100 or U-17 to surprise in Madison as both hulls tested this off-season on a short course at a limited race in Sammamish, Washington. These are the only two teams to have tested this season, I might add.

Something else that may need to be taken into consideration when picking for Fantasy Madison. If there is only four boats on the front line, with a trailer. It could be hard to pick a boat that is going to make the finale. Don’t make the finale, don’t get any points…
